BAM hails appointment of Partridge as RBM Governor

Bankers Association of Malawi (BAM) president Phillip Madinga says the appointment of George Partridge as Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor signals the desire by government to move swiftly to restore macro-economic growth and stability.

The BAM president said this on Sunday when reacting to Partridge’s appointment by President Peter Mutharika on Friday.

“We look forward to reuniting with the new governor who brings a wealth of experience in banking and regulation,” he said.

Madinga, who is also Standard Bank Malawi plc chief executive, said Partridge’s extensive knowledge and experience of banking and private sector operations will be central to his new role “as he brings a deep understanding that balances the private-public interest”.

Until his  appointment, Partridge was Minister of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism, a portfolio he held since October 2025.

Before being appointed minister, Partridge had worked at Press Corporation plc as group CEO up to 2022 and prior to that, he was Malawi Stock Exchange-listed National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc chief executive officer.

Before joining NBM in 1994, he worked in various positions at RBM for 11 years, rising to the position of director.

Partridge takes over from MacDonald Mafuta Mwale, who was appointed RBM Governor by former president Lazarus Chakwera in January 2025, replacing Wilson Banda.

Partridge, who will be have to be confirmed by Public Appointments Committee of Parliament, is coming at a time inflation rate, recorded at 26 percent in December 2025, has been declining due to a drop in non-food inflation to 26.5 percent from 30.1 percent the previous month.

The new governor is expected to chair his first Monetary Policy Committee.is month.
